Taking Lignosus rhinocerus for 3 months resulted in an improvement in pulmonary function and a decrease in respiratory symptoms
Tiger milk mushroom (TMM; Lignosus rhinocerus) supplementation was investigated on 50 voluntary participants.
Participants were required to take 300 mg of TMM twice daily for three months.
Pulmonary function and respiratory symptoms were assessed during baseline and monthly follow-up visits.
Results demonstrated that supplementation of TMM significantly suppressed the levels of proteins IL-1β and IL-8, which can cause inflammation in the airways and lead to respiratory symptoms like coughing and wheezing.
TMM also decreased the levels of MDA, a marker of oxidative stress which can damage the cells in the respiratory system.
This resulted in an improvement in lung function and a decrease in respiratory symptoms.
In addition to that, TMM also increased the levels of IgA, an antibody that helps to protect the body from infections, and total antioxidant capacity, which can help to protect the respiratory system from oxidative stress and reduce the risk of respiratory diseases.
